Have you read about heroic efforts to save the life of a bleeding victim but thought, never me? Don’t worry, chances are you may never need to rise to that challenge. But would you know what to do if you were out at sea and your captain suffered a major bleeding accident? Knowing what to do – and having the right supplies – can help you save a life, just as it did for Captain Cortes’s first mate, as you’ll read about below.
A Severe Bleed Can Happen Anywhere
Alfredo Cortes is a seasoned seaman with medical training and years of experience captaining yachts. His safety record is outstanding. At the Miami Boat Show he learned of the Mobilize® Rescue app and trauma kit. He had no idea how important they would be to him and his crew.
Responsive and Prepared
Captain Cortes believes it’s important to support his crew and ensure preparedness. He seeks tools that bridge gaps in training and calm nerves during stressful events.
“One of the challenges I was looking to solve was that, while I have medical training and a large kit on board, I am the only one who knows how to use the equipment. However, with responsibility for flybridge activities and leadership of the crew, navigational duties often preclude the ship’s captain from administering medical care,” Cortes says.
The Mobilize® Rescue app paired just-in-time (JiT) medical instructions with clearly labeled medical supplies available in emergency trauma kits of varying sizes. “Mobilize [offers] a cool app with step-by-step instructions that pretty much anybody can follow,” Cortes says.
“Mobilize allows us to respond to emergencies on board with just-in-time instruction. And, for the first time ever, my crew used this tool to provide medical care for me. It’s pretty cool.” – Caption Alfredo Cortes
Unexpected Turn of Events
During his first charter that year, Captain Cortes suffered a serious injury to his leg that caused profuse bleeding and was so painful that he wondered if he’d hit an artery.
He sent his crew to retrieve his new Mobilize trauma kit to quickly control the bleeding. His first mate easily followed the instructions in the tablet, applied a tourniquet and dressed the wound. Once back in port, Cortes went to the emergency room, where the attending physician mended the wound with stitches.
STOP THE BLEED®
Now, the Mobilize trauma kit that worked so well for Captain Cortes and his crew has earned a Stop the Bleed license. STOP THE BLEED® empowers people to save lives, encouraging training and access to supplies to treat traumatic injuries.
